A GIS map of the Vieux Carré will become the foundation of the Virtual Library database. This map is sorely needed for both the Vieux Carré Commission (VCC) and City Hall. This map includes building footprints, balcony/gallery outlines, an update to and digitizing of the Historic Significance Color-ratings Map (this hasn't been done since the 1980s), and a snapshot of property information (square, zone, building type, current style, primary/secondary use, easement status, and National Landmark status.)
In order to build-out this map, I first had to work with City Hall IT to determine rules and designation so the map is accurate, useful for the VCC Staff and works in conjunction with other City Hall departments and technology. I also worked with a Vieux Carré Commission Foundation committee to determine property attributes that would showcase useful information for property owners, architects, contractors, and the public. This map is being built with the latest in GIS software, ESRI's ArcMap. Initially, this will become an overlay on property.nola.gov. Eventually it will serve as the foundation for the Virtual Library.
